Support without judgment

For families & caregivers

A caregiver’s role is to offer practical, respectful help and recognize when professional or emergency care is needed.

Safety first: Do not stop or change benzodiazepine medication without appropriate clinical guidance. Seizures, delirium, severe confusion, or difficulty breathing require emergency evaluation.

Listen first

Ask what would feel supportive. Avoid minimizing distress or assuming every person will have the same course.

Help with logistics

Offer rides, meals, childcare, appointment notes, and help contacting care teams with the person’s consent.

Respect autonomy

Do not change, withhold, or administer medications outside a clinician’s plan.

Know the safety plan

Discuss warning signs, emergency contacts, and who will call for help if a serious complication occurs.

Take care of yourself

Caregivers also need rest, boundaries, and support. A sustainable plan benefits everyone.
