When symptoms may start
Symptoms can begin within hours or days after a change, depending on the drug and individual circumstances. Longer-acting medications may have delayed onset.
Commonly reported symptoms
Anxiety, sleep disruption, tremor, sweating, nausea, sensory sensitivity, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating can occur. These symptoms are not specific to withdrawal.
Serious complications
Seizures, delirium, severe confusion, and other dangerous complications require emergency evaluation. Abrupt cessation after dependence can be life-threatening.
What to discuss with a clinician
Describe onset, severity, functional impact, medical history, and any other substances or medications involved. Ask what warning signs require urgent care.
